Success in School and in Life: Scottsbluff High School Students Learn Diesel Tech Training and Safety Skills
In the heart of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, a unique collaboration is shaping the future of local students and businesses alike.
Spearheaded by dedicated 21st Century leaders like Director of Safety Ernie Ewing, and Human Resources Specialist Cheyanne Peterson, the hands-on learning and curriculum developed to teach Scottsbluff High students the ropes of being a diesel technician is more than just a training program—it’s a pathway to success. Diesel Tech Training programs like this are essential for equipping the next generation with the skills they need.
The Genesis of the Program
The idea for the program began to take shape in June 2020, during a meeting between Derek Deaver, Justin Shaddick, and Dr. Andrew Dick, key figures in the Scottsbluff school system. Cheyanne Peterson, then working for a different local business, joined the conversation and helped turn the sporadic discussions into a concrete plan. The goal was to launch the Diesel Tech Training program by January 2021.
“I’m not going to take any credit for it, but they had already had some conversations trying to get some stuff together,” Cheyanne says. “We sat down after 3 or 4 years of people just kind of randomly talking about it, and I think I entered the picture and said ‘well, let’s get this into action.’”
Cheyanne speaks humbly about her role in the program’s beginnings, but Ernie is quick to give her all the props in the world.
“Her heart is really in this Diesel Tech Training, and she’s been in it from the get-go,” Ernie says.
Community Collaboration
The program’s success hinges on the involvement of local businesses. Six partners, including 21st Century Equipment, Murphy Tractor & Equipment, Inland Truck Parts and Service, Floyd’s Truck Center, Nebraska Machinery Company, and Aulick Industries, were identified early on. These businesses not only provide expertise but also offer their facilities for tours and hands-on Diesel Tech Training sessions. This collaboration ensures that students gain practical skills and understand the real-world applications of their training.
A Focus on Safety and Skills
Safety is a cornerstone of the program and students learn the fundamentals of safety in the workplace. Ernie emphasizes the importance of proper safety apparel, equipment handling, and awareness. This foundation is crucial as students move on to more complex tasks in their Diesel Tech Training.
The program comprises of units, each focused on different aspects of diesel technology. Students start with basic skills, such as tool identification and simple wiring, and progress to more advanced topics like hydraulics and electrical systems. This scaffolded approach ensures that students build a solid foundation before tackling more challenging subjects.
“Every year that goes by, I think, they’re more engaged and this is truly what they want,” Ernie says, reminiscing about the students he’s interacted with thus far. “I had an instructor tell me one time that vocational programs are designed for individuals who want it, need it, and can profit from it. We have these high school students that are looking for that sort of direction already with our Diesel Tech Training program.”
Soft Skills and Job Readiness
Beyond technical skills, the program also emphasizes soft skills. Students learn how to write resumes, fill out job applications, and conduct themselves in interviews. These skills are vital for their future careers and help them stand out in the job market.
Cheyanne highlights the importance of networking and building relationships with potential employers. The program includes tours of partner facilities, where students ask questions and engage with professionals. This real-world interaction is invaluable, providing students with insights into the industry and potential job opportunities through the Diesel Tech Training program.
Career Pathways and Student Engagement
Scottsbluff High School has a unique approach to career readiness through its career pathways program. Starting in their sophomore or junior year, students begin to identify and navigate their career interests. This structure helps funnel students into relevant programs, such as the Diesel Tech Training program, ensuring they are well-prepared and motivated.
Students have responded positively to the program, appreciating its real-world job experience. The program has helped students with moderate absenteeism become more engaged in their education. It has also provided at-risk students with a new direction, motivating them to complete high school and pursue further training or employment in diesel technology.
Success Stories and Impact
The program has already seen significant success. One notable example is Jaxson Eskam, a student who joined the Diesel Tech Training program in 2021. Jaxson would go on to take the initiative to introduce himself to leadership and secure a spot working for 21st Century in Scottsbluff. Today, he works full-time as a technician and is a testament to the program’s impact.
The program’s influence extends beyond individual success stories. It addresses a critical need in the community by building a pipeline of skilled workers ready to enter the workforce. This initiative not only benefits the students but also strengthens local businesses by providing them with well-trained employees through Diesel Tech Training.
Looking Ahead
The program continues to evolve based on feedback from students and partners. New units and classes are continuously being added to meet the changing needs of the industry. The commitment to safety, skill development, and job readiness remains unwavering.
“This batch of students we have this year is probably the most engaged I’ve come across,” Ernie says. “I’m really excited to see what this group does here.”
